Matric Results 2020: How To Get Them

Are you eager to get your matric certificate? Here’s how to check your 2020 matric results.

After a stressful year, the last thing you need to worry about is figuring out HOW to check your results as soon as they have been released. Have no fear. We’re here to help. 

We will show you exactly how to find out your matric marks,  let you know the matric results release date and everywhere you can go to find out your marks for the matric exams.

2020 Matric Results Release Date

You will be able to see your matric results from the 23rd of February 2021.

Matric Results: Four Ways to Check

1. Check Matric Results Online

The easiest way to find your matric marks online is to visit The Department of Education’s websiteWhen checking on their website, keep in mind that there will be a lot of website traffic. So, there will probably be delayed response times. You will get your full results though.

Here is what you need to do to check your results on the website:

  • Log on to the Department of Basic Education’s website here.

You will need the following to log in:

  • Exam number (don’t misplace this during the holiday!)
  • Home Language
  • Your personal details (name, surname, etc.)

If you attended a public/government school, then your results will definitely be available on this site. If you went to a private school, you can find your matric results on the IEB website. News24 will also have your results available.

2. Check Matric Results in The Newspaper

Your results will be published in the Newspaper on the matric results release date. It will be in all of the big Newspaper brands, like The RapportThe Argus and The Star.

Remember it won’t be your full matric marks. It will just state whether or not you passed and with what symbol you passed – B for Bachelors PassD for Diploma, etc.

3. Check Matric Results Through Your High School

A day after the initial results are released, your school will give you your results. This is not the official matric certificate, it’s just your results for each subject. You will be able to fetch your official matric certificate in a few months – once it has been printed in full. If you are eager to get exact dates you should contact your school to find out more information.

4. Check Matric Results on Your Cell Phone

You can use your cell phone (or someone else’s) to receive your results. SABC Education and the Department of Basic Education have provided a service that allows you to get an SMS with your results.  Yep, it’s pretty awesome!  You can register and have your results sent to you as soon as they are released.  How? You have two options:  

  • Register via SMS
    • Send your ID number and exam number to 35658
    • You’ll get a confirmation SMS once you’ve successfully registered.
    • SMSes cost R1 and free SMSes don’t apply
    • Get your matric results immediately when they are released
  • Use the USSD service
    • Dial *120*35658# on the release date
    • Answer a few multiple questions
    • Enter your ID number 
    • You will get your matric results per subject
    • USSD rates apply

Please note: this matric results service will be available until 31 January 2020.

You could also opt for the old-school method by giving the department a call on the day that the results are released. Just take note that a lot of matric students will be phoning to find out their results so you might wait for quite a while to get your results.

What should I do after I get my matric results?

Once you have received your matric marks, remember that you still need to get your matric certificate. You will be able to fetch the certificate once they are printed. 

If you are happy with your marks, the next step is to start thinking about University, taking a gap year or doing an internship. Those are just some of the options.

If you end up not passing matric or don’t achieve the results you wanted – don’t worry. There are a few options for you. You can use an alternative route to obtain your NQF 4, do a bridging course, study an extended degree program or take a gap year to figure your options out.
